littlbox's News

Posted by littlbox - January 2nd, 2021

Hello again!

This morning I posted my first episode of littlMix, basically the podcast version of the playlists of NG tracks I've been making since last April. I enjoyed putting it together, and I'm willing to do an episode every week! If you've got an hour, give it a listen and let me know what you think!

iu_218950_6075713.jpg

In the meantime, I've got several other projects in the works for 2021, including...

LOGAN DOCUMENTARY

Very soon I'm going to be back in talks with my crew about the documentary and the possibility of shooting this summer under very careful circumstances. As soon as we have a definite answer, we'll let everybody know. In the meantime, you can keep up with the movie on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

SCHOOL

During my first semester, I went pretty dark online to try and figure out school. Now that I have a better idea of what I have to expect, I'll be able to balance school and an online presence much better this upcoming semester.

LIP HEADS

That's right, those little creatures you may/may not remember. I've decided to make several more episodes this year, each about a minute in length. The first one will be coming out January 24.

YOUTUBE

I'm going to be more active on my YT channel. Besides Lip Heads episodes, I have a few short documentaries in the works and some shorts and skits I'd love to share with you guys!

MUSIC

I'm going to be recording a CRAP-ton of music while I'm back home, and hopefully while I'm back at school as well. I have a few Bandcamp releases I'll be staggering out over the course of the year under a few different aliases, the first one coming out sometime in February.

I'd also like to begin offering my services as a composer to anyone who needs one on their project. I'd like to get a few instrumentals out this month to showcase my range before I officially post this in the Collabinator, but if you already know my music and need somebody for your project, then by all means shoot me a DM. I'm free! (time-wise and money-wise)

FIVERR

I've also decided to give Fiverr a try! If you're in need of a music video editor, you can find my services here: https://www.fiverr.com/share/Yeo2WQ

This year is going to be a lot of experimenting on my part, and I'm excited to see where this all leads. If nothing else, I'm excited to be bringing new things to life.

Let's go 2021!

Why, hello there, friend!

What's that, ol' pal? My review of 2020? Well sure. Just take a seat there...

Several people I know have already done their 2020 reviews, so I figured I'd give my account into how this unique year turned out for me. Unfortunately I keep forgetting how terrible I am at remembering the past; I'm usually focused on future endeavors rather than past ones, and it takes me a bit of time to really remember certain things. So I'm going to try and list off the major points of 2020 for me, but if I've forgotten anything, please spam me and let me know.

So, without further ado, here are...

LITTLBOX'S SUPER DOOPER (and very long)

MOMENTS OF 2020

[warning: very long]

  • My friend @GoodL and I ended our podcast A Couple of Crickets at episode 50 with a showstopping interview with @TomFulp.

I never really talked about why we started that podcast in the first place. For that, we'll have to go back to late 2018...

@FlowDownStream was in full steam, and I had collaborated with GoodL on a couple of musical tracks as well. I was feeling like I needed something to put out on a more constant basis, and GoodL was going through a bit of a creative block. So a podcast that we could go back to and upload new episodes weekly seemed like the best cure for this.

At first, we didn't have much to go on. Keep in mind, I hadn't really talked to GoodL before doing the show, so the first few episodes were really us throwing conversation topics at the wall and seeing what stuck, inviting several fellow FDSers onto the show as guests. It wasn't until later that we realized what really united us - Newgrounds.

It was around this time that I finally found a community of people on NG to talk to, and these were people we invited onto the show as guests - @ninjamuffin99, @NickConter, @RGPAnims, @dogl, @irri, @Snackers, @LoganPhresh, @TheDyingSun. The show started a Discord server, Tom started frontpaging our podcasts, we had a rival podcast with @GroundsPatrol, we got guests like @Aaron-Long, @ChutneyGlaze, @Eggy, @Cyberdevil, @meatcanyon, @KawaiSprite, @mrjoeyprosser...our audience grew and grew, and our show evolved appropriately.

Doing this podcast was honestly a lot of fun. I loved playing the part of the almost insane showrunner to counter GoodL's more organized demeanor. My favorite part was probably doing the Community Talks and ad hoc talking to fans over the Discord call.

I wish I had put more effort into the show. Ultimately the death of the show came from a lack of interest in maintaining it. But I'm glad we ended it the way we did, and I think it stands as a document into an interesting point in both our lives.

  • Uploaded LIP HEADS - FLOWER MAN

I'm not much of an animator, but I do love tracing over my lips and putting them over stick figure bodies.

Unfortunately, this was a point where I was doing LIP HEADS for the wrong reason. I detested animating this episode, and when it didn't get much of a response upon release, I felt as if I had wasted my time with it. That's why I haven't done a Lip Heads episode since this one.

However, more on that later...

GoodL did a good job summarizing the beginnings of NGP in his 2020 review.

Basically, NGP was originally concepted as a show hosted by GoodL and myself and produced by @Will, which sounded perfect. We didn't have to worry about editing and producing by ourselves anymore; we could just sit and talk, and Will would make sure it would sound much more polished. A perfect concoction of ACOCk and GroundsPatrol.

But the COCk proved overwhelming, and after a test run, we realized it wasn't going to work.

I decided to step down from the show. This was partially from the decision that we made from the test run, but mostly because of my next point...

  • I Worked (a lot)

I was living in an apartment for the first time, and I had bills to pay. Working 32-40 hours a week at a grocery store job covered all the costs and gave me a little bit more to save up, but this took up a lot of my time and energy. I wasn't enough of a long-term planner to utilize the time I had off as well as I could've, but I did my best with what I had a that point.

As a result, I really had to prioritize with the time I did have off, and helping run a podcast about Newgrounds was not one of those. I helped host a couple of episodes, but in August, just before school started, I stepped down from the podcast.

It's been running smoothly without me, and I'm very happy about that. Will, @PsychoGoldfish, @Xinxinx, and everyone else involved have been doing a great job with it. I'd just rather focus on other ventures. Speaking of which...

  • Raised funds for the Logan Whitehurst documentary

On January 30, I launched a Kickstarter to raise funds for a project that's only been a dream until the last couple of years - a documentary on a late hero of mine, Logan Whitehurst. By the end of the fundraiser in the end of February, we raised nearly $17,000 for the film! Thank you so much to everybody who contributed where they could to help see this through.

After the Kickstarter, we were all set to hit the road in May and start interviews. Until we...

  • Postponed production on the Logan Whitehurst documentary

Almost immediately after the Kickstarter, COVID-19 hit America big time. We held out hope for the documentary for about a month, but in April it became obvious that this disease wasn't going away anytime soon. So we had to postpone production.

Everybody's been very understanding, and I'm very grateful. We've been spending this year focusing on getting the Kickstarter rewards out to the appropriate backers. and making plans for shooting next May. Next year will let us know whether or not this is going to be possible, but I have my fingers and toes crossed.

  • Got invited to Pico Day, which got postponed. :(

This was a bit of a bummer. I was looking forward to meeting a lot of my Discord pals irl, not to mention Tom and a number of other NGers, but hopefully they'll remember me when Pico Day 2022 happens.

  • Started a "punk" band with @dogl and @Carmet and released an album.

Late last year, I posted a punky track called "Special Little Snowflake". It actually did pretty well considering it never got frontpaged, and I was happy with how it turned out. This guy Dogl messaged me around that time saying that if I ever wanted to start a punk band to hit him up.

So, around February, I took him up on his offer, and we spent the next three months trading tracks back and forth. Carmet was added into the mix, and he added some truly delightful bass tracks to our very shitty songs.

Finally, at midnight on May 15, we very hastily put together the final track - "she dumped me :(" - and posted the album onto Bandcamp and slowly onto Newgrounds under the name George Washington Carver (@GWCtheband).

I'm actually pretty proud of this project. It was a lot of fun to make, and working to make each dumb little song as fun as it could be proved to be a satisfying feeling. Hopefully somebody enjoyed listened to them as well.

Check it out on Bandcamp: https://george-washington-carver.bandcamp.com/releases

  • Won 1st Place at AIM 2020

I spent about a week in June working on my submission this year's AIM, and I was pretty proud of it. I hoped for an Honorable Mention, but I didn't ever think I would win.

Thank you again to @MrCarlKarlsson for an awesome art piece, and to the judges @Troisnyx, @vocaloutburst, @Seth, @Random-storykeeper.

  • Got a bunch of buddies together to cover Paul McCartney's McCartney II album

Being bored at work gives you a lot of time to think. And for some reason, as the year progressed, I became more and more obsessed with the idea of hearing some of my friends cover certain songs off of Paul McCartney's magnum opus of a solo album, McCartney II.

So I asked a bunch of them to contribute, and by some miracle they did!

iu_217087_6075713.jpg

You can check out the result on Bandcamp here: https://littlbox.bandcamp.com/album/the-mccartney-ii-collab

Thank you again to @GWCtheband (@dogl), @GoodL, @dkdrumming, @kawaisprite, HenryEYES, @ShelbyBryant, @Aaron-Long, @harrisonwyrick, @Bitbeak, and to @LoganPhresh for the amazing artwork!

  • Made a music video for Kawai Sprite

Through July and August, my biggest project was a music video for Kawai Sprite's "_burning_drug_" track. I got my friend Bryan Thomason, who has mad camera skills and equipment, and we collaborated on the final result, which you can see here:

If I could do it over again, I would make sure the lighting wasn't as dark, and I'd reconfigure the idea as to add more visual substance to the video overall. But as it stands, I'm very glad I did it, and that Kawai finally has a music video for one of his songs.

  • Started college

Between August and November, I've been attending my first semester at the University of North Carolina School of the arts (UNCSA) for a major in filmmaking. Being my first time being around similarly minded people for a long time (at least irl), it took some adjusting to, but I've already made some fantastic friends there, and I'm very excited for next semester and for my future with school and filmmaking!

  • CRACKEGGS

I voiced this cartoon for @Kolumbo nearly two years ago, and it finally came out! I think it's honestly pretty funny, but I'll let the art speak for itself...

  • Didn't die

This is a pretty big one. I've been fortunate enough not know anyone that succumbed to the virus, and I was able to maintain my income as a grocery store worker during the pandemic, and that's a lot more than some people can say. I'm very grateful for this, and that I can say that 2020 was a good year for me. I'm sorry for all the people this year screwed over, and hope that next year turns out better for everyone.

  • Summary (tl;dr)

Hiccups aside, 2020 was a really great year for me. I worked on a lot of projects that I felt were worth my time, and I'm getting ever closer to the place and person I'd like to be.

These yearly reviews are a good chance to look at everything I've done, but my biggest fear is that I'll think I'll actually have "accomplished" something, if that makes sense. I'm very proud of what I've done, but I don't want these projects to become ego fuel for me and prevent me from growing or working on new projects; I'd like for them to just sit and be what they are, let nature take it's course on them, so that I can move along to the next one.

I'm just making it up as I go along, folks.

And that's it! I hope everybody's had at least an okay 2020, and stay tuned for 2021, along with another major newspost about my plans for next year.

The other day I uploaded my final project before headed off to school - a music video I made, with my friend Bryan, for @kawaisprite and his fantabulous song "_burning_drug_". You can check out the video HERE:

and the song HERE:

Yesterday, I awake to see that the video has received a daily 5th!

iu_153515_6075713.png

I'm really happy that people enjoyed it, especially since it was a completely live-action endeavor (& I have a history with live-action on NG), but I think Kawai's music helped immensely, and I thank him for letting me go ahead with this. And to everyone who watched, thank you. :)

So, that's pretty much it....

This Tuesday, I'll be moving into my dorm, and I'll be starting school the week after. I'm still working on the Your Friend Logan documentary, but most of the duties will be handed off to my producer Matlock. Other than that, I probably won't be poking my head around here for the next few months, since I'll be trying my best to focus on my schoolwork.

One last shout-out: My fantastically talented friend and old high school teacher, Mr. Shelby Bryant, now has an NG account! Check out @ShelbyBryant and his (should-be) hit single "Use Your Muse"...

Until later, take care, and keep your eye on the sky.

No, the road.

No, the sky again.

How about one eye on the road and one on the sky?

There we go.

It's been an insane weekend.

McCartney II 2: Electric Boogaloo

I was finally able to pull off something I've wanted to do for a while...get a bunch of friends and have them cover one of my favorite albums of all time. The McCartney II Collab came out this past Saturday, and I couldn't be prouder. You can download it for free off of BANDCAMP, or check out a partial playlist here on NEWGROUNDS.

iu_151431_6075713.jpg

EDIT: Lemme just give a shoutout to everyone involved; they deserve it -

@GWCtheband, @GoodL, @dkdrumming, @kawaisprite, @HenryEYES, @ShelbyBryant, @Aaron-Long, @harrisonwyrick, @Bitbeak

AIM 2020

Then, to top it all off, I look in my notifications to learn that I won this year's AIM contest! Sweet Jesus Crackers!

iu_151432_6075713.jpg

There were so many awesome pieces this year, and I still have a hard time believing that I was picked as first place. A big thanks to the judges (@Troisnyx, @vocaloutburst, @Seth, @Random-storykeeper) who thought my track was worthy of such a prize, and you can check out the other winners and runner-ups HERE. My personal favorite would have to be @Codefreq and their track:

____

As huge as both of these events are, I've got one more trick up my sleeve before school. Stay tuned...

Howdy.

For the last six or seven years, I've had a dream - to make a documentary about Logan Whitehurst.

Logan was an extremely talented artist and musician, with a zany sense of humor to boot. I first discovered him through the works of Jason Steele (Charlie The Unicorn, Llamas With Hats) and Neil Cicierega, who both pointed to him as their inspiration. And the more I discovered about the guy, the more I fell in love not only with the music, but his personality. Logan seemed like a genuinely nice person - something which is hard to come by - and I really wanted to share who he was with as many people as I could.

Here are some animations by @RWappin - who will be animating for the documentary - of a couple of fantastic Logan songs to introduce you to the kind of music Logan made.

Finally, about a year ago, I began contacting people online. Family, friends, fans - anybody I could. I was able to confirm over 40 people to be interviewed, and with my producer Matlock Zumsteg (who started out as just an interview subject, but was so dedicated to the project I bought him onboard) we planned out how we were going to tackle this.

And now, I have a Kickstarter.

If this piques your interest whatsoever, please be sure to check it out. And if you think you know someone who would be interested, share it with them!

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/connernyberg/your-friend-logan-the-4-track-mind-of-logan-whitehurst

Thank you so much.

Side-note: I apologize for the delays in the last few @ACoupleOfCrickets episodes. This project has been taking up all of my spare time, but I promise Episode 48 will be up by this Sunday.

haha u fell for clickbate

So about a month ago, I hit up my boi @HenryEYES to see if he wanted to a live-action sketch. He had mentioned wanting to do something live-actiong for a while, and I wanted to get back into making more videos after a hiatus this past summer. He seemed keen to the idea, so I typed up something in twenty minutes, we rehearsed a bit in Discord and added bits that seemed funny, and thus "DO NOT OPEN" was born

It took about a month to get together, only because Henry is a klutz (luv u boo) and had to keep reshooting parts. But I shared what we had with some online friends, and everyone seemed to have a positive response.

That's when @ninjamuffin99 said he would only watch the whole video if it was on Newgrounds. He might've been kidding (probably not), but the idea seemed funny to me. A live-action video?...on Newgrounds??...THAT'S CRAZY!

But, historically speaking at least, there's always been live-action on Newgrounds. One of my all-time favorite creators on the site, @Knox, got his start by posting a couple of silly webcam videos to the site before his series Klay World took off.

And let's not forget that, up until 2016 (when it was taken down for copyright reasons), the single most popular video on the site was the original NUMA NUMA video by one Mr. @GMan250

So, if only to see what response it would trigger (and for the aforementioned ninjamuffin to watch it), I posted the video to Newgrounds.

And two hours later, I get a message from my designated driver Henry...

iu_81426_6075713.png

He wasn't kidding.

iu_81427_6075713.png

This actually caught me off-guard. I was completely ready for the possibility of the video getting blammed by users, but not manually removed off the site by the mods.

So, I took a look in the Terms of Use to see if my video had broken any rules. After all, maybe "NO LIVE-ACTION ALLOWED" is indeed a rule of the site that I hadn't known before.

It isn't. And as far as I know, the sketch didn't have stolen material nor real pornography in it.

So I shot that guy Tom a message.

iu_81428_6075713.jpg

And not an hour later, I got back a response.

iu_81429_6075713.jpg

Since it's been republished, it's actually gotten a pretty good response! In fact, we were lucky enough to get the Underdog of the Week award!

iu_81430_6075713.png

But this whole incident made me realize how much some people are absolutely, vehemently opposed to live-action on the site, and I honestly do not understand why.

Personally, I would love to see live-action grow on this site. Though I understand Tom's reasoning of not wanting to blindly "open the floodgates", I think a live-action scene would help to grow this site even more, and a flowering and more active community would result.

So, if you are reading this article, and are genuinely distraught that I put up a video like DO NOT OPEN, please let me know your reasoning in the comments below. I'm curious to hear thoughts on either side of this "issue".

In the meantime, if you've got a little bit of Christmas left in you, you can listen to the newest episode of A Couple of Crickets HERE:

That should probably kill whatever Christmas you have left.

Howdy, partners! Hope y'all 're havin' a tootin'-snootin' helluva time, you sons of bi-

*coughs out Southern*

Ahem, I mean hi! How goes it?

Lots of cool things are happening to people everyday, and I've got my fair amount to share! So let's go!...

MUSIC/ALBUM - I mentioned back in August that I was in the midst of making a new album. This album is still in the works, with songs varying from completely done to not even recorded yet. However, progress is being made every day, and I'm really excited with what's turning out. The album's currently titled Nostalgia For Yesterday, and I'm planning on getting it out around Thanksgiving.

I uploaded a track from the album today to give you guys a taste. It's called "Happy Marching People", and it's one of my favorites.

You'll also see some awesome cover art by one @TheDyingSun! She did a fantastic job on this, and you can see the artwork itself here:

In the meantime, got an awesome track going with @GoodL for the Spooktacular that'll knock your socks off and send them to Iowa (where all socks go to die).

And thank you for the love on "Special Little Snowflake"! It was originally supposed to be on the album, but I decided it didn't quite fit with the rest of it. And thanks once again to @Carmet for a kick-(b)ass line.

ANIMATION/MOVIES - Currently working on a non-Lip Heads animation featuring voices from @GoodL and @dogl. It's called "Scam Likely", and it's coming along pretty well! I hope to have it out within a week or so for you viewing pleasure.

Once that's completed, I hope to get a quick Lip Heads out for Halloween. But be warned, it's bound to get SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-

-KY

I'm also working on a number of live-action stuff. Some of you may know that I'm undertaking a feature-length documentary on musician and artist extraordinaire Logan Whitehurst called Your Friend Logan, and that's my biggest priority thus far. If you'd like to keep up with progress, check out the Facebook page HERE.

I'm also finishing up a short film called "Early Bird", which is currently getting a score by Owen Otto, cool dude to all. Once that's done, it'll go up on my mostly dormant YouTube channel.

ACOCk - You kiss your mother with that mouth?

Everything's been going real well with the podcast. Certified demigod @TomFulp has given us and GroundsPatrol our own little section on the frontpage, which is still beyond amazing. Thanks, Tom! (now just bring back the NINJAMUFFIN99 BIRTHDAY COLLAB)

We won't be recording this weekend since GoodL's busy moving to Zimbabwe, but we'll back next weekend with a VERY special guest, so stay tuned!

OTHER - The apartment's been cozy. On the lookout for a roomie to splint rent with, and I'm currently working two jobs to cover living expenses and my Beanie Baby addiction. It's a real problem, guys...

Oh, and I met @NickConter and @MrFelis irl about a month ago! They're a cool couple of crickets.

iu_61308_6075713.jpg

That's me on the left, sipping some sweet tea. Yum.

Oh, and BOO!

Did I spook you?

Howdy y'all! Cowboy littlbox speaking.

I just got the internet turned on in my new apartment, and now the balance of nature has been restored. It's really awesome/frightening being out on my own, and I'm beginning to look around the city for cool places to hang out, not to mention for jobs to make sure I keep up with the rent. :P

In the meantime, I thought it'd be cool to set up a Ko-fi account! Now you can give me your money FOR FREE! Every little bit helps out with the bills, so if you happen to have some extra cash, ay, you're my new best friend! ⁽ᵘⁿᵗᶦˡ ʸᵒᵘ ʳᵘⁿ ᵒᵘᵗ ᵒᶠ ᵐᵒⁿᵉʸ ᵃⁿᵈ ᵗʰᵉʸ ᶠᶦⁿᵈ ʸᵒᵘ ᵈᵉᵃᵈ ᶦⁿ ᵃ ᵈᶦᵗᶜʰ ˢᵒᵐᵉʷʰᵉʳᵉ⁾

It's awesome to see the traction that Operation 2009 is getting! That was a fun episode to be on, and it was fun hanging with @GoodL, @PsychoGoldfish, and @willKMR at the same time (don't tell Will I enjoyed his company).

I've got some really cool things planned for the next month, including some awesome guests for @ACoupleOfCrickets, some groovy tunes you can jam to, and a decent enough animation. So definitely stay tuned! :D
